Welcome to Zipedia project page
Zipedia is a Mozilla Firefox extension enabling off-line browsing of Wikipedia pages.
How it works
Wikipedia provides timely XML dumps of their page contents. These so-called "Wiki Dumps" are usually available in all languages from http://download.mediawiki.org. Zipedia can process such compressed wiki dump to be used locally. The Zipedia extension enables crude searching by key words of page titles and attempts to re-format the Wiki syntax into a passable HTML.
Limitations of Zipedia
Zipedia is a poor man's choice, when access to the real thing (i.e. http://en.wikipedia.org) is not possible or too slow.
- HTML formatting is inferior to that of Wikipedia
- Key word searching possible only in page titles
- Images must still be fetched from the internet, if a connection is available
Advantages
Only one advantage: You can use it without a need for direct internet access to Wikipedia.
- Slow/no internet
- Wikipedia site blocked by authorities (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_censorship)
- Off-road access to knowledge
